complete –> #68 swim in the ocean
68) visit the beach/ swim in the ocean
This week, the family and I took a vacation to visit some friends in Houston. Somehow, aquariums, turtles, the beach or some form of water recreation always seem to figure into our vacations. This trip was no exception.
Last time we were in Houston, we visited the very cool Downtown Aquarium. That place had a little bit of everything - exotic fish tanks, a petting tank, a white tiger, photo ops, a nice restaurant and even a small amusement park. It was kind of expensive, but considering all of the attractions, it was worth it.
This time, I took some of the older kids on a little road trip to Lake Jackson to visit the Sea Center Texas, a fresh water fish hatchery run by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. We got to pet anemonies and crabs in the touch tank, saw fish from several different aquatic habitats found in or near the Texas coast, and toured the hatchery. I really enjoyed the tour and found it very informative. The kids had a good time too. Best of all — it was free! There wasn’t even a charge for parking! You can’t beat that.
| The next day, our friends took us down to Galveston where spent the day at the beach. It was good to get some sun. The water was warm and kind of choppy, but not too rough for the little ones to play in the water. There was a lot of sea weed (I don’t remember there being so much sea weed the last time we went to the Gulf at SPI.) The kids played with some kids whose family was parked next to us, and we even saw a sting ray swimming in the waves near where the kids were playing. |
We had a great time on our vacation, and it was great to be able to cross another thing off my 101 list. Be sure to check out my full 101 things in 1001 days list for more updates. Follow along, be inspired and leave me a comment to encourage me as I work to accomplish my goals.

update –> #60 regular dates and D3D’s
60) date night twice a month, and D3D’s once per month for a year
We’re still working on this one, but it’s getting better. I always spend a lot of time with my family, just not a lot of one on one time.
Lately, my wife and I have been getting out an average of once or twice a month. I go on a D3D with one of the kids every week.

update –> #33 read 3 classic novels
33) participate in book club and read 3 classic novels and at least 10 books not mentioned here
I haven’t joined a book club yet, but I have, err, read four classic books. Ok, I didn’t really read them; I listened to the audio book version from Librivox.org. That counts doesn’t it? For the purposes of our discussion here, we’ll say that it does count. I will refer to here to me having read the books.
The four titles that I’ve read are (in random order):
- Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe
- The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
- Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
- Tess of the d’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy
Tess: This isn’t one that I would have picked on my own, but I saw part of the “Masterpiece” on PBS and decided that I wanted to see what happens to her. As I was reading the book, the thought kept occurring to me that I probably wouldn’t fit in Victorian society because I speak my mind too much. If Tess had just been forthcoming about her circumstances, instead of bearing the shame that was thrust upon her, she would have been better off in the end. This is one lesson I will share with my girls when they get a little older.
Oliver Twist: I have seen various performances of Oliver Twist over the years, from the musical to part of the PBS “Masterpiece” performance, but this was my first time to read the book of Dickens’s novel. I found it to be quite darker than all of the adaptations that I have seen over the years. I wouldn’t let my kids read the book until they were older, but as an adult, I found it interesting to see just how much this kid was able to overcome.
Robinson Crusoe: Robinson Crusoe was a very complex book. The book is almost mythic, so I decided to give it a chance, though I almost put it down a couple of times. I found it hard to stomach some of his descriptions of the slave trade and indigenous populations, and I found it downright offensive that he when he embarked on a trip to illegally transport his own slaves to the Americas (even Brazil of all places!) Getting past all that, once he was in island solitude, I found the description of his life utterly fascinating….the way he survived; the way he salvaged from his ships; the way he hunted and domesticated the pigmy goats; and the way he came to know God. You have to take this one with a grain of salt, but as an intellectual exercise, I really enjoyed Robinson Crusoe.
The Hound of the Baskervilles: A classic Sherlock Holmes mystery…enough said!
Now I need to join a book club and read nine more. I’ll keep you posted. Be sure to check out my full 101 things in 1001 days list. Follow along, be inspired and leave me a comment to encourage me as I work to accomplish my goals.
complete –> #8 set up criteria to go back to school full time
8) set up criteria to go back to school full time
I figured out what I need to do to be able to quit my job and go back to school full time. There’s only two criteria, really. First, I would have to have some kind of income to support my family. Second, we would have to be able to buy insurance. Simple enough…now, will it ever happen? That’s an entirely different discussion. Maybe someday! We’ll see. In the meantime, I’m doing school part time; that’s enough for now.

update –> #32 read a book in Portuguese
32) increase Spanish, Portuguese and German vocabulary, as shown by reading a book in each
The other day I was browsing the foreign language section of the big used bookstore in the city and was thrilled to find a Portuguese translation of Agatha Christie’s The Secret Adversary. I like a good mystery, and though I had never read the book in English, it looked like something that I could handle, so I bought it.
Indeed, I was able to read it with minimal effort. In fact, I got so drawn into the story that toward the end, I had a hard time putting it down. My kids would laugh at me because I would often burst out excitedly “Gente! Não poden ver que é o Americano?!? It’s the American! “ (Spoiler alert: It wasn’t really the American who was the bad guy. It was the English lawyer, but I had my eye on him too. It had to be one of them, right? Anyway, I digress…)
I feel that reading the book has improved my Portuguese by helping me to review the grammar, to remember some words that I had forgotten, and to know how to better phrase things to sound like a native speaker. I had to use the dictionary a couple of times, but mostly I either knew the words or was able to infer the meaning through contextual clues.
My goal was to read a book in Portuguese, Spanish and German. The bookstore has a large selection of German and Spanish language books, especially classics (Goethe, Shultze and the like). I could probably pull it off in Spanish but will have to work on my German a bit more before I’m ready to try to read an entire book “auf Deutsch.”
When I bought my copy of “”O Inimigo Secreto,” the bookstore had several other Portuguese language novels, but by the time I went back, they were all sold out. I can’t wait until I can get another one because I found the experience of reading (and better yet, of understanding) a book in Portuguese to be an enjoyable one. I look forward to having the same experience in Spanish and in German.

complete –> #64 Attend Fa-Dau Ball
64) attend
Father-Daughter Ball Ball
|
Tonight was the annual Father-Daughter Ball, and I went with one of my daughters. We had a BLAST! It was SO MUCH FUN! They had an excellant DJ who kept it upbeat and lively, with only a few slow dances. I haven’t danced that much in I don’t know how long. It was a two hour dance and we were on the floor for the better part of the night. My little one is already making plans to go next year. |
I am marking this one a resounding 100% complete!

update –> #79 Christmas decorations up after Thanksgiving
79) put Christmas decorations up the day after thanksgiving and take them down new years day
We totally missed this one this year any way you slice it. We went out of town for Thanksgiving, which for those of you don’t know is on a Thursday, and didn’t get home until Sunday. That was a week ago. We had all of our usual week night activies, plus a couple more, so we didn’t have time to get out the Christmas decorations until tonight. Still, we’re doing better than last year, when we didn’t get our tree up until a week before Christmas. Maybe next year!

complete –> #59 run a local marathon
59) run a local marathon
| This weekend, the kids I walked and ran to complete the 1 mile fun run of the local winter marathon. It was a cold Texas morning, and despite how much I absolutely dislike running, we had a lot of fun. I enjoyed it so much that I am thinking that doing the fun run might inspire me to jump into another goal, #56, loose 30% of body weight. You have to start somewhere, right? |

update –> #5 25 websites
5) get 25 profitable niche websites up and running
I brainstormed this week and came up with about 30 possibilities. The next step is to brainstorm articles ideas for each topic. Once I have a good list of possible articles for each topic, the next step will be to come up with a schedule and start writing the ’seed’ articles. I like to have atleast 10 articles written before I put up the site. That way, I have a little breathing room if life gets busy or if I get writers block.
This coming week is Thanksgiving, so I probably will not get very far.

update –> #101 polymer clay dictionary
101) write polymer clay multi-language dictionary
I’ve started a multiple language dictionary project for polymer clay artists. So far, I only have a list of the terms in English that I think would be helpful to the polymer clay community. I have very few foreign language terms, but will be populating those columns soon.
In the next couple of days, I will publish what I have.

complete –> #81 fix hard disk recover photos
81) fix hard disk on computer and recover photos
Our computer crashed back in 2008. We had most of our pictures from 2003 to 2008 stored on that computer, and although there were some CD back ups from 2003-2007, none of the 2008 photos were backed up.
I muddled around with it for a few months until this summer, when I sat down in earnest, and fixed it. I bought a new hard drive, re-installed the OS, found a linux file recovery program, compiled it and ran it. Finally, after about two weeks of working on it every day, I was able to recover all of the files from our crashed hard drive. What a mess, though. I am having to go through and reorganize them.
What’s the main lesson learned here kids? Take frequent backups and store them somewhere other than your hard drive! (This is very embarassing for me to admit. I know better. Shame on me.)
I am marking this one 100% complete.

story and complete –> #77 new car
77) buy a new family car
I bought a new minivan for the family back in May. The family had been wanting a new car since our old one was all banged up and had over 100,000 miles on it, but I kept putting it off. What changed my mind, you ask?
Well, on the first Sunday in May, we were driving home across the state, coming from my father’s funeral. Around dusk, we hit a small deer. I swerved to miss it, but we ended up hitting it anyway. Luckily, the deer stayed low and didn’t fly up and hit the windshield, so no one was injured. We all came out ok, though we were very shook up.
It was getting dark, and we were out in the middle of nowhere with 4 small children and a car that was spewing all kinds of steam and liquids. The car barely ran, but with the Lord’s help, we were able to limp along for 16 miles until we made it to a motel in some small Texas town. The next day, our relatives came to get us and take us home.
The car still had a couple of years of good use in it, even it wasn’t a pretty site to behold, but after hitting the deer, it was totaled. We had to get a new car.
Oh, and did I mention that all this happened on our anniversary? That night, my wife and I enjoyed a beautiful (**ahem, cough, cough**) romantic evening for 6 in a motel room in some small town in the middle of nowhere. It was a night that none of us will soon forget. I guess every gray cloud does have a silver lining.

complete –> 65) go bowling
65) go bowling in a bowling alley with family (not Wii)
Since we got our Wii, bowling has been a very popular activity at our house. The kids liked it so much that when I was writing my 101 in 1001 list back in January, I decided to make bowling at the bowling alley one of my goals.
This summer we went to the bowling alley twice as a family, had fun and will probably go again. The first time was when we were visiting my Brother-in-Law in Austin. The other time was on Labor Day. Little known to us, the missionaries from our church went bowling on their day off (P Day), which happened to be Labor Day. The missionaries change areas every few months, so we hadn’t had a chance to meet this set yet. About a month later, they visited us at our home and remembered us from the bowling alley. Is it a good thing or a bad thing when total strangers remember you like that? LOL!
I am marking this one as complete.

update –> 59) run a local marathon
59) run a local marathon
The kid’s school is using one of the local marathons as a fundraiser for gym equipment, so they talked me into it. We’re going to do the fun run this year. OK. Maybe it isn’t a full marathon, but considering how out of shape I am, and how much I absolutely HATE running, which was was how my grandfather used to discipline me and my cousins when we were kids, I think that doing a fun run is a great start. I am going to mark this as 100% complete, but there may be more updates in the future.

57) take a yoga class
One of the local malls was offering free yoga classes this summer, so I took one. You’ve gotta love free things. I enjoyed the class too. One thing I learned was that my left side is stiffer than my right side, which I favor. I haven’t done any more yoga, but I do try to stretch every night.

I haven’t seen the doctor yet this year. I was going to put it off until next year, but since my deductible is so high (>$2000, before they cover anything), and it will reset in January, I will probably get this done soon. My wife has been urging me to do it.

28) enroll in college
I’ve been very picky about college. In the past, I’ve tried night school, but with a family and career, it just didn’t work out. I wanted to attend a flexible program, from a real university (some place that you’ve actually heard of), which would allow me to earn a real degree. I found such a program at the University of Alabama in its External Degree Program. I have enrolled and plan on pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology. I was able to transfer in my past credits. I will also be able to submit a portfolio of my professional accomplisments and training for credit. My classes start in January. I am very excited. I’m not a total slacker….
I promise! OK, it’s true that my last update was on February 21st, but I haven’t forgotten my 101 in 1001 goals. Over the next couple of days, I will post some updates on my individual goals. I am also going to update the list page, making it into more of a chart where I can mark the percentage complete (or on items without a clear deliverable, I will indicate green, yellow or red to indicate ongong progress.) After that, I’ll try to update the site once a week…or maybe once every other week…er…ok, atleast once a quarter :)
Watch for my updates, leave your comments, and don’t be afraid to send me an email to prod me along if I’m not making progress.
My first week updates 2/21/09
My first week of the 101 in 1001 challenge is over, and what a whiz-bang of a week it has been. Here are my updates:
Under the Career category:
01 - get a mentor — I got one! I made a list of people who I thought would be good mentors, people who I trusted and thought I could learn something from. The more I thought about the names on the list, the more one name kep coming to the top. I asked that person out to lunch and asked him to be my mentor. He agreed and gave me my first assignment - to reread “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen Covey.
06 - post 5 articles/week — I’ve been a slacker on this one, only posting one article on my turtle website. I need to do better.
Under the Spiritual and Service: category:
18 - read scriptures daily and study one passage daily in depth — I read Book of Mormon twice this week, but didn’t study any passages in depth (scripture mastery)
Under the Intellectual and Skills category:
28 - enroll in college — I haven’t enrolled yet, but I did a lot of research and comparisons and requested more information from one school that I like.
33 - participate in book club, read 3 classic novels plus 10 books — this week, I read a couple of books in the Chronicles of Narnia series (”Prince Caspian”, and “The Dawn Trader”)
35 - read one random English language Wikipedia article per day — I have been reading the daily featured Wikipedia article of the day….learning a lot.
Under the Physical and Health category:
49 - 10,000 steps — I didn’t increase my steps, but I did get a new pedometer (the one that I was using last year broke). Hey, it’s not much, but every small step is a step forward, right?
Under the Family and Home Life category:
60 - date night twice a month and D3D’s once per month for a year — My wife and I went out (with the kids) on Valentine’s day to dinner and a movie (Paul Blart, Mall Cop). Yeah, it was real romantic, I know, but we couldn’t do what we had planned on so this was a fun alternative. To make up for it, this weekend, we went out to a nice Italian restaurant for dinner, followed up by crepes at the Oriental market. This year, we are doing better on dates. Last year, we barely got out, but this year, we’ve already been several times. I’ve also started doing D3D’s (Da-Dau-Dates…don’t want to spell it out…soo many sickos on the internet) with the kids again. Since Thanksgiving, we had done a lot of activities as a family, but not so many one on one activities.
83 - bake something every week — fresh, made from scratch (with help from the bread machine) cinnamon roles for breakfast before Church
I lost my thumb drive, where I was keeping track of my lists, so numbers 14 (personal improvement goals), 44 (entertainment skills), and 74 (home improvement projects) were interrupted. I need to go back through my notes and try to recreate these lists.
